Xi'an Travel Guide (2026)

Xi'an is where Chinese civilization started. As the eastern terminus of the Silk Road for over a thousand years, it's home to the Terracotta Army, a fully intact Ming-era city wall you can cycle on top of, and a Muslim Quarter where the noodles and dumplings have been served in the same family-run shops for generations. For most foreign visitors, Xi'an is the second stop after Beijing — and for many, the highlight.

When to Visit

Best months: March–May and September–November

Season Months Weather Crowds Verdict
Spring Mar–May 10–25°C, dry, occasional dust Moderate ⭐ Best
Summer Jun–Aug 25–35°C, hot High OK (very hot)
Fall Sep–Nov 8–22°C, clear, golden Moderate ⭐ Best
Winter Dec–Feb -5 to 8°C, dry Low OK (cold)

Avoid: National Day (Oct 1–7) and Chinese New Year (variable, late Jan/Feb) — Terracotta Army tickets sell out days in advance.

How to Get to Xi'an

By Air

Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) — 35 km northwest of city center.

  • From Beijing: ~2 hours, ¥500–1,500 one-way
  • From Shanghai: ~2.5 hours, ¥600–1,500
  • From Hong Kong: ~3 hours, multiple daily flights
  • Airport to city: Metro Line 14 (¥7, 45 min) or DiDi (¥80–120, 45 min)

By High-Speed Rail

Xi'an North Railway Station (西安北站) is the high-speed hub.

  • Beijing → Xi'an: 4.5–6 hours, ¥515 (second class)
  • Shanghai → Xi'an: 6–7 hours, ¥669
  • Chengdu → Xi'an: 3.5–4 hours, ¥263
  • Luoyang → Xi'an: 1.5 hours, ¥174

Book via Trip.com or 12306 English.

How to Get Around

  • Metro: 8 lines, ¥2–7 per ride. Covers most tourist sites. English signage throughout
  • DiDi: Works with Alipay/Visa
  • Taxis: ¥10 base + ¥2/km. Use DiDi to avoid language barrier
  • Buses: Cheap (¥1–2) but English route info is limited
  • Bike: Public bikes and Mobike available; the city wall is a popular cycling route

The Terracotta Army (兵马俑) — What You Need to Know

Tickets: ¥120 (Mar–Nov), ¥90 (Dec–Feb). Book online via the official WeChat mini-program 1–7 days in advance during peak season.

Getting there:

  • From Xi'an city center: Take Metro Line 9 to Huaqing Pool Station (华清池站), then bus 临潼免费摆渡车 (free shuttle) — or tourist bus 306 (¥7) from Xi'an Railway Station
  • By DiDi: ¥150–200 one-way, ~50 min
  • By tour: Most hotels can book a half-day tour for ¥400–600 including tickets and guide

At the site:

  • Three pits total — Pit 1 is the largest and most impressive
  • Bring a guide or audio rental (¥30) — without context, it looks like a parking lot of broken statues
  • Allow 3 hours minimum (4 if you include the on-site museum)
  • Avoid weekends — domestic tour groups flood the site from 10 AM onward

Nearby: Huaqing Pool (华清宫) — historical site with the love story of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei. Same direction as the Terracotta Army, ¥120 ticket.

The Ancient City Wall (西安城墙)

One of the best-preserved city walls in the world. Built in the Ming dynasty (1370), 12 km around the old city center, 12 m high.

  • Tickets: ¥54 (¥27 for children)
  • Hours: 8 AM–10 PM (last entry 9 PM)
  • Bike rental: ¥45 for 2 hours (single), ¥90 (tandem), ¥180 (4-person). Available at South Gate, North Gate, and East Gate
  • Walking the full loop: 3–4 hours
  • Sunset ride: Most atmospheric time is 5–7 PM in summer, 4–6 PM in winter. The wall catches the light beautifully

Pro tip: Bike east–west, not north–south, on the south section — flat and protected from the wind.

Muslim Quarter (回民街)

The food and shopping heart of the old city. A 500-year-old neighborhood with Hui Muslim culture, street food, and family restaurants.

What to eat (¥5–30 per item):

  • Biangbiang noodles (裤带面) — hand-pulled, thick, chewy
  • Persian-style kebabs (羊肉串) — the street's signature
  • Rou jia mo (肉夹馍) — "Chinese hamburger," slow-cooked beef or lamb in flatbread
  • Yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍) — lamb soup with crumbled flatbread; a Xi'an specialty
  • Cold noodles (凉皮) — refreshing in summer

Where to eat:

  • For street food: The main bazaar street (Beiyuanmen 北院门) is touristy but worth one walk-through
  • For a sit-down meal: Tongshengxiang (同盛祥) for the official Yangrou Paomo experience, or Defachang (德发长) for dumplings
  • Avoid the "100-yuan set menus" pushed by touts on the main street — they're overpriced

Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) and Small Wild Goose Pagoda (小雁塔)

Big Wild Goose Pagoda — Tang dynasty (652 AD), 64 m tall, 7 stories. Houses Buddhist scriptures brought from India by monk Xuanzang. ¥50 entry to climb.

Small Wild Goose Pagoda — quieter, less crowded, ¥30 entry. Surrounded by a peaceful park.

Both are worth a 1–2 hour visit, especially if you're into Tang dynasty history.

Day Trips from Xi'an

Destination Distance Best For Transport
Mount Hua (华山) 120 km east Hiking, dramatic scenery High-speed train + bus, 1.5 hr
Huaqing Pool 30 km east Historical hot springs Same direction as Terracotta Army
Famen Temple 110 km west Buddhist temple, finger bone relic Bus 2 hr
Han Yangling Mausoleum 20 km north Underground Han dynasty tomb Bus 30 min, less crowded than Terracotta

Mount Hua (华山) is the most popular day trip. Two cable cars take you up — you can hike the "Plank Walk" (a wooden boardwalk bolted to a vertical cliff face) if you don't have a fear of heights. Allow a full day.

Where to Stay

  • Inside the city wall (钟楼/南门 area): Most central, walkable to Muslim Quarter. Mid-range ¥300–600, luxury ¥800–2,000
  • Near Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔): Quieter, more modern, good metro connections. ¥200–500
  • Near Xi'an North Railway Station: Practical for early/late trains, less character. ¥150–300

Recommended for first-timers: Stay inside the wall — you can walk to the Muslim Quarter, the Bell Tower, and the City Wall, and DiDi to everything else is cheap.

Recommended Restaurants

  • Tongshengxiang (同盛祥) — iconic Yangrou Paomo
  • Defachang (德发长) — dumplings, including a "dumpling banquet"
  • Biangbiang Noodle King (裤带面王) — for the namesake noodles
  • Lao Sun Jia (老孙家) — another famous Paomo chain, 100+ year history
  • For upscale: Chang'an Club or Tang Song — modern takes on Tang dynasty cuisine

FAQ

Is the Terracotta Army worth it?

Yes, but with caveats. The site itself is genuinely impressive — thousands of life-sized warriors, each unique. But it's an hour outside the city, can be very crowded, and most visitors don't realize how much context a guide adds. Get a guide or audio rental.

Can I see the Terracotta Army and the City Wall in one day?

Yes, easily. Terracotta Army in the morning (depart hotel by 8:30 AM), back in Xi'an by 2 PM, City Wall bike ride in the late afternoon. Add the Muslim Quarter for dinner.

How many days do I need in Xi'an?

  • 1 day: Terracotta Army + City Wall + Muslim Quarter (tight)
  • 2 days: Add Big Wild Goose Pagoda + day trip to Mount Hua or Huaqing Pool
  • 3 days: Add Han Yangling, Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Tang dynasty dinner show

Is Xi'an safe?

Yes. Very safe for tourists. Petty crime is rare. The main concern is the air quality (check AQI app) and the summer heat.

Do I need a guide for the City Wall?

No, but rent a bike. Cycling the 12 km wall is one of the best things to do in Xi'an, and the only good way to experience it.

What's the best souvenir from Xi'an?

  • Replica Terracotta Warriors: ¥20–200, available at every souvenir shop
  • Xi'an paper-cuts (剪纸): traditional folk art, ¥20–100
  • Shaanxi tea (茯茶): fermented brick tea, available at the Muslim Quarter
  • Tang dynasty replicas: small bronze mirrors, silk items, ¥50+

Can I take a train from Xi'an to other Silk Road cities?

The Lanxin high-speed rail connects Xi'an to Lanzhou (3 hours), Dunhuang (requires flight or slower rail), and Urumqi. The historical Silk Road is not directly traceable by rail, but the route roughly follows the modern line.

What language barrier issues will I face?

Less than you might think. The Muslim Quarter vendors and many restaurant staff speak basic English. Younger people (under 30) generally have some English. The Metro is fully bilingual — you won't get lost on transit.

Practical Tips

  • Bring sunscreen and a hat — the city is dry and sunny
  • Wear comfortable shoes — the city wall bike ride and the Terracotta Army both involve lots of walking
  • Cash is less useful than in Beijing/Shanghai — Alipay/WeChat work everywhere in Xi'an
  • Spring sandstorms (March–April): Check the air quality; if PM2.5 > 200, consider rescheduling outdoor sites
  • Hotel concierge: Most mid-range and luxury hotels can book Terracotta Army tours, day trips, and restaurant reservations — use them

Where to Go Next

Next city How far By high-speed rail
Beijing 1,200 km 4.5–6 hr
Shanghai 1,500 km 6–7 hr
Chengdu 650 km 3.5–4 hr
Luoyang (Longmen Grottoes) 360 km 1.5 hr

Xi'an to Chengdu is a natural pairing — the high-speed train passes through the Qinling Mountains, and Chengdu offers pandas, Sichuan food, and a slower pace.
